maqua

Ethnomedicine
A moxibustion-like folk therapy which consists of any of a number of small, deep burns inflicted either in areas adjacent to a diseased organ, or on points related traditionally to the medical problem.

Maquas do not pose a threat to the patient and may be of use as an indicator of the localisation of the site of the original complaint by a patient who is subsequently seen by mainstream medical practitioners; it is not used in the working mainstream medical practice.
