Lowden State Park
Location:Along the Rock River, just north of Oregon, in Ogle County.
Facilities:Individual and group campsites (limited electricity),showers, concession stand, picnic areas, outdoor toilets, drinkingwater, hiking trails (4 miles), boat ramp and docks (adjacent to thepark).
Activities:Camping, boating, water skiing, fishing, hiking. (Swimming in the river is not permitted.)
Special Features:Park features a 50-foot-tall concrete-reinforced statue of a NativeAmerican that towers above the Rock River on the bluffs north ofOregon. Although the sculptor, Lorado Taft, dedicated the statue toNative Americans, it has become most commonly associated with ChiefBlack Hawk. According to legend, as he was leaving the area after theBlack Hawk War, the Sauk warrior talked of the great beauty ofthe Rock River Valley and admonished his captors to care for the landas his people had.
