Kola Gulf

 

a fjord-like gulf in the Barents Sea, on the northern coast of the Kola Peninsula. Length, approximately 57 km; width at the entrance, 7 km, narrowing in the southern part to about 1 km; depths at the entrance are 200–300 m. The eastern shore is mountainous, mostly precipitous; the western shore is more gentle. The ground is rocky. The Tuloma and Kola rivers fall into the Kola Gulf. Tides are semidiurnal, with a magnitude of up to 4 m. In winter, ice forms off the southern shores. The ice-free port and city of Murmansk lies on the Kola Gulf.
