Kolos

 

a central publishing house of the State Committee for Publishing, Printing and the Book Trade of the USSR Council of Ministers, publishing works dealing with agriculture and the procurement of agricultural products. Founded in Moscow in 1918 as a small publishing house issuing popular agricultural literature under the auspices of the RSFSR People’s Commissariat of Agriculture, it has grown into a large specialized publishing house.

Kolos publishes scientific-theoretical and popular-science works and production literature on current problems of the development of agricultural science and production. It also publishes reference and educational literature, translated works, several popular series (such as New Developments in Agriculture and Progressive Technology for All Kolkhozes and Sovkhozes), and agricultural journals and albums—all of which publicize advanced production methods and the achievements of agricultural science. In 1971, Kolos published 473 titles of books and pamphlets, totaling 12,716,000 copies and 162,726,000 printed sheets. The publishing house was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1971.
