leukemic coagulopathy

A complication of leukemia, characterized by hemorrhagic diathesis due to 1. Abnormalities related to the leukemia per se–eg, BM infiltration, dysmorphic megakaryocytes, ↓ platelet lifespan, qualitative platelet defects–↓ platelet aggregation with ATP and collagen stimulation or defects in ADP release and DIC due to sepsis or transfusion reactions and coagulopathy due to leukemic therapy.2. BM toxicity due to combination chemotherapy that may ↓ fibrinogen, factors IX, XI, plasminogen, antithrombin III, ↑ factor V, uric acid nephropathy–due to massive cytolysis of malignant cells, vitamin K deficiency–treatment of infections due to granulocytopenia, ↓ vitamin K-producing intestinal bacteria and heparin anticoagulation.
