leukoaraiosis

(lū'kō-ahr-ī-ō'sis), Decreased vascular density, especially in deep white matter in the brain, on MRI or CT; may be caused by demyelination, gliosis, or decreased perfusion.

leukoaraiosis

A late-20th-century term for patches of rarification of white matter caused by multiple focal infarctions due to small vessel disease, which occur in dementia, especially Binswanger type.
Risk factors
Hypertension, smoking, diabetes, hyperhomocysteinemia and heart disease.
