Komar, Igor’ Valer’ianovich

Born Aug. 20 (Sept. 2), 1907, in Moscow. Soviet economic geographer, doctor of geographic sciences (1960).

Komar graduated from the Moscow Planning Institute. From 1931 to 1943 he worked for planning and economic bodies of the Urals on the development and location of the region’s power and industry. He headed an interdisciplinary expedition to the Upper Kama region in 1944—45. He became a senior research worker at the Institute of Geography of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1945. His basic works are on the economic geography of the Urals and the integrated development of its natural resources, as well as on general theoretical and regional questions of economic geography and the problems of the rational use of natural resources. He has elaborated a concept of resource cycles.
