Kompong Cham

(käm`pông` chäm), city (1971 est. pop. 35,000), capital of Kompong Cham prov., SE Cambodia, a port on the Mekong River. The third largest city in Cambodia, it has a large textile factory, built with aid from the People's Republic of China. Major irrigation projects, started after the revolution in 1975, have improved the area's agricultural production.
