Komsomolsk-Na-Amure

a city in Khabarovsk Krai, RSFSR. It is a port on the lower course of the Amur River and has a railroad station on the Volochaevka-Sovetskaia Gavan’ line, 356 km northeast of Khabarovsk. With a population of 226,000 (1972; 71,000 in 1939), it ranks second among the towns of Khabarovsk Krai.

Komsomol’sk-na-Amure was founded in 1932 in taiga and swamps through the efforts of Komsomol members who had come from all corners of the country, and it was named in honor of them on Dec. 10, 1932. Komsomol’sk-na-Amure stretches along the left bank of the Amur River for more than 20 km and is divided in two by the valley of the Silinka River. It is an important industrial and cultural center of the Far East. The chief branches of industry are shipbuilding (Lenin Komsomol Plant), metallurgy (Amurstal’ Plant), and machine building (Amurlitmash Plant, production of hoisting and transport equipment, Metallist Plant). It also has an oil refinery, which processes petroleum from Sakhalin. Located here are logging and lumber combines, furniture and garment factories, and building-materials enterprises. The city has pedagogical and evening polytechnic institutes, mining-metallurgical and construction technicums, a polytechnic, and a school of medicine. It also has a drama theater, a museum of local lore, and an art museum.
