Kondrat’ev, Viktor Nikolaevich

Born Jan. 19 (Feb. 1), 1902, in Rybinsk. Soviet physical chemist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953; corresponding member, 1943). Member of the CPSU since 1948.

Kondrat’ev graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in 1924. In 1931 he began working at the Institute of Chemical Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His principal works deal with chemical kinetics, molecular spectros-copy, the structure of matter, photochemistry, and the study of elementary processes in chemical transformations. Kondrat’ev has developed methods of detecting and determining the concentrations of free radicals and atoms, as well as methods of measuring the reaction rates of free radicals and atoms. He has also provided experimental proof of the theory of chain reactions. A recipient of the State Prize of the USSR (1946), Kondrat’ev has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, two other orders, and several medals.
