Mehmet Emin

(pseudonym, Yurdakul). Born May 1, 1869, in Istanbul; died there Jan. 14, 1944. Turkish poet and ideologist of Pan-Turkism.

Mehmet Emin was a deputy to the Mejlis from the Young Turk Party. He later joined the Atatiirk movement and was elected a deputy to the Great Turkish National Assembly. His collection Turkish Verses (1898) is imbued with nationalistic themes. In the collection Turkish Saz (1914), Mehmet Emin protested against monarchical oppression, but later reverted to nationalism in its most reactionary form (the collection On the Road to Victory, 1918), calling for war and eulogizing the mythical “original homeland” of Turan.
