Kononov, Andrei Nikolaevich

 

Born Oct. 14 (27), 1906, in St. Petersburg. Soviet specialist in Turkic languages. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1958). Member of the CPSU since. 1944.

Kononov graduated from the Leningrad Oriental Institute in 1930. He became a professor at Leningrad University in 1950. From 1961 to 1963 he served as director of the Leningrad Division of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He wrote A Grammar of Modern Literary Turkish (1956), A Grammar ofMordern Literary Uzbek (1960), and numerous works on the history of the Turkic languages and the history of Oriental studies. He is an honorary member of the Turkish Linguistic Society (1957), the Society of Orientalists of Hungary (1970), and the Academy of Sciences of Hungary (1973). Kononov has been awarded three orders.
