Nandi

Nandi

a group of related peoples (the Nandi, Kipsigi, Kama-sya, Keyu, Suk, Endo, Marakwet, Tatoga, and others) living northeast of Lake Victoria, mainly in Kenya, with smaller numbers in Uganda and Tanzania. The total population of the Nandi is about 1 million (1970, estimate). The Nandi speak languages of the southeastern group of the Nilotic language family. Most Nandi retain ancient traditional religious beliefs (ancestor and nature cults); some are Christians. Their main occupations are livestock raising and, to some extent, irrigated mountain agriculture.
