The physiologically important monoamines derive from aromatic amino acids—phenylalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan—and the thyroid hormones by the action of aromatic amino acid decarboxylase enzymes. They include neurotransmitters and neuromodulators, in particular catecholamines (dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine) and tryptamines (serotonin and melatonin).
