Nat Turner Rebellion of 1831

an insurrection by Negro slaves in the USA, led by the Negro Baptist preacher Nat Turner. The rebellion began August 21 in Southampton County in Virginia. The rebel band, numbering about 70 persons armed with axes and scythes, went from plantation to plantation, murdering slaveholders. Near Jerusalem, then the county seat, the rebels were dispersed by armed slaveholders and troops. Turner and 19 other rebels were captured and executed.

The Nat Turner Rebellion had a great impact on the slaves in the southern states and was a powerful stimulus for the growth of the abolitionist movement throughout the country.
