Iskenderov, Adil’ Rza Ogly

Born Mar. 10, 1912, in Giandzha, now Kirovabad. Soviet director and actor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1959). Member of the CPSU since 1940.

Iskenderov graduated from the State Institute of Theatrical Arts in 1936. From 1937 to 1960 he was director and manager of the M. Azizbekov Azerbaijan Theater (Baku). He directed Korneichuk’s Platon Krechet (1936), Vurgun’s Vagif (1928) and Farkhad and Shirin (1941), Shirvanzade’s Honor (1940), Ma-medkhanly’s Morning of the East (1948; State Prize of the USSR), G. Dzhavid’s Sheikh Senan (1949), Dzhabarly’s In the Year 1905 (1954), Medzhnunbekov’s The Bay of Il’ich (1958), and Shakespeare’s Othello (1959).

Since 1961, Iskenderov has worked in films both as an actor and director. He appeared in the films This One If Not the OtherOne; Romeo, My Neighbor; Tale of Love; Twenty-Six Baku Commissars; and The Last Crossing. He has been teaching at the M. A. Aliev Azerbaijan Institute of Arts since 1937. (He became a professor there in 1956.) He was a deputy to the fourth and fifth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR. Iskenderov was awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
