Konotop


Konotop

(kŏnətŏp`), city (1990 est. pop. 96,900), N Ukraine, on the Ezuch River. It is a rail junction and agricultural center with railroad repair shops and an electromechanics industry. Konotop was founded in 1634 by the Poles, who made it a fortress. It was ruled briefly by the Ukrainian hetman Chmielnicki and his successor and later became a Polish district center.

a city, the administrative center of Konotop Raion, Sumy Oblast, Ukrainian SSR, on the Ezuch’ River (a tributary of the Seim). A railroad junction. Population, 71,000 (1972). The Krasnyi Metallist Plant, which manufactures automatic systems for the coal and ore mining industries, a plant for locomotive and railroad-car repair, a piston plant, two factories for reinforced-concrete items, two building materials plants, railroad transport enterprises, a garment factory, a meat combine, a creamery, and other plants are there. Konotop has the general engineering department of the Kharkov Polytechnic Institute, industrial and construction technicums, and a medical school. A people’s amateur theater and a museum of local lore are also in the city. Konotop came into being in the 17th century.
