Konovalov, Nikolai Vasil’evich

Born Feb. 2 (14), 1900, in St. Petersburg; died Apr. 15, 1966, in Moscow. So-viet neuropathologist. Academician (1950) and vice-president (1950–58) of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. Member of the CPSU (1943).

Konovalov graduated from the medical department of the First Moscow State University in 1924 and worked with L. O. Darkshevich, G. I. Rossolimo, and E. K. Sepp. In 1948 he became director of the Institute of Neurology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR.

Konovalov’s principal research was devoted to problems of degenerative diseases of the nervous system. His work on cerebellar pathophysiology, hepatolenticular degeneration (West-phal-Wilson-Konovalov disease), multiple sclerosis, and poliomyelitis is widely known. Konovalov received the Lenin Prize (1961) and was awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
