Meiningen

(mīn`ĭng-ən), city (1994 pop. 24,589), Thuringia, E central Germany, on the Werra River. Manufactures include textiles, paper, and metal products; there is an industry in railway repair. Meiningen was first mentioned in the 10th cent. and passed to the dukes of Saxony in 1583. It was the capital of the duchy of Saxe-MeiningenSaxe-Meiningen
, Ger. Sachsen-Meiningen, former duchy, Thuringia, central Germany. The capital was Meiningen. A possession of the Ernestine branch of the house of Wettin, it became a separate duchy in 1681 under Bernard, third son of Ernest the Pious of Saxe-Gotha.

 from 1680 to 1918. In the second half of the 19th cent. the ducal theater of Meiningen acquired an international reputation and long set the style for German dramatic performances. The ducal orchestra, conducted (1880–85) by Hans von Bülow, was also famous. The ducal palace in Meiningen dates from the 16th and 17th cent.

a city in the south of the German Democratic Republic, in Suhl District, in the upper course of the Werra River. Population, 25,400 (1970). Meiningen’s major industries are machine building, hardware, clothing, woodworking, and paper. A pedagogical institute is located in the city. From 1680 to 1918 the city was the residence of the dukes of Saxe-Meiningen, and the ducal park and castle have been preserved. From the 1860’s to the middle of the 1890’s, Meiningen was a famous center of German theatrical art. A museum of the theater is located there.
