Nesmeianov, Andrei Nikolaevich
Born Jan. 15 (28), 1911, in Moscow. Soviet radiochemist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1972). Brother of Aleksandr N. Nesmeianov.
Nesmeianov graduated from Moscow State University in 1934 and was on the staff at the Moscow Aviation Institute from 1934 to 1947 and then at Moscow State University (he became the head of the subdepartment of radiochemistry in 1960). His main works are devoted to the chemistry of atoms formed as a result of nuclear transformations, to the methods of preparation of radioactive isotopes and tracer compounds, and to the use of radioactive isotopes in studying commercially valuable materials. Nesmeianov and his associates investigated the reaction of “hot” atoms with various chemical compounds. He developed an isotope exchange method and a number of other techniques for the use of isotopes in measuring the vapor pressure of relatively nonvolatile substances.
