Ovannavank

Ovannavank

a medieval monastery complex in the village of Ognavan, Ashtarak Raion, Armenian SSR, on the edge of the Kasakh River ravine.

The Ovannavank complex consists of a main church, which is a domed and cruciform church noted for its fine architectural detail (1216–21); a single-nave basilica built in the fifth century and later covered over with a vaulted roof; and a four-pillar gavit (1248–50; see GAVIT) with an opening for light in the roof, above which there is an open, 12-column rotunda built in 1274. The gavit also has arcature on its facade. Also preserved are fortified walls with towers, the remains of 12th- and 13th-century structures, and tombstones.
