Paffengol’ts, Konstantin Nikolaevich

 

Born Mar. 5 (17), 1893, in the village of Albinets, in what is now Faleshty Raion, Moldavian SSR. Soviet geologist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR (1943); honored scientist of the Armenian SSR and the Azerbaijan SSR (1963).

In 1920, Paffengol’ts graduated from the Petrograd Institute of Mines. From 1919 he worked with the Geological Committee, which was renamed the All-Union Geological Research Institute in 1939. He was a professor at the University of Yerevan from 1945 to 1952. In 1959 he began working at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR.

Paffengol’ts’ principal works are devoted to the regional geology, hydrogeology, magmatism, and metallogeny of the Lesser Caucasus, namely, Armenia and the adjacent regions of Azerbaijan and Georgia, and to problems of the alpine folded zone. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1950 for his monograph The Geology of Armenia, published in 1948. He has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
