Konstantin Petrovich Torson
Torson, Konstantin Petrovich
Born circa 1790; died Dec. 6 (18), 1852, in Selenginsk, in what is now the Buriat ASSR. Decembrist; naval officer.
From 1819 to 1821, Torson participated in the antarctic expedition of F. F. Bellingshausen. One of the islands discovered on the expedition was named after Torson; however, it was renamed Vysokii Island after the Decembrist uprising. In 1825, Torson joined the Northern Society of Decembrists and supported the moderates in the organization. He was sentenced to 20 years at hard labor, which he served in Chita and at Petrovskii Zavod.
