(mahr-shŏn[h]'), the area on the sphenoid and occipital bones at the base of the skull from which the dura mater is readily detached.

Marchant’s zone

An obsolete term for an area of the occipital and sphenoid bones at the base of the skull where the dura mater is firmly detached. The finding was described by Gerard T Joseph Marchant (1850–1903), a French surgeon.
