Kontrimavičius, Vytautas

 

Born Jan. 22, 1930, in Kaunas. Soviet helminthologist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR since 1970. Member of the CPSU since 1972.

Kontrimavičus graduated from the Leningrad Veterinary Institute in 1952. He was a graduate student and laboratory re-searcher from 1952 to 1968 at the Helminthology Laboratory of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Moscow. In 1968 he became head of the Department of the Biological Problems of the North of the Northeast Complex Scientific Research Institute of the Siberian division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR at Magadan. In 1970 he became director of the Institute of the Biological Problems of the North of the Far Eastern Scientific Center of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR at Magadan.

Kontrimavičius has devoted his major efforts to the faunistics, classification, ecology, and zoogeography of the parasitic helminths of mammals. He has also investigated general parasitology and helminthology. He has analyzed the general principles of the formation of the faunistic complexes of parasites characteristic for certain groups of hosts.
