Nan LingNan Lingmountains in southeastern China, separating the basins of the Yangtze and Hsi Chiang rivers. They are part of the South China Mountains. The Nan Ling consist of a series of short ranges rising from 800 to 1,000 m above low-mountain terrain. They are about 1,200 km long, and the highest peak is 2,185 m. Their trend is predominantly sublatitudinal. They are composed of sandstone, argillaceous schist, granite, and limestone and have a well-developed karst topography. The ranges have been dissected by longitudinal tectonic valleys, ruptures, faults, and transverse erosion canyons. The Nan Ling represent an important climatic boundary in China: subtropical forests predominate on the northern slopes and tropical forests on the southern slopes. Nan Ling
