Lev Isakovich Krasnyi

Born Apr. 4 (17), 1911, in St. Petersburg. Soviet geologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970). Member of the CPSU since 1941.

Krasnyi graduated from the Leningrad Mining Institute in 1936. Between 1933 and 1941 he was head of an expedition for the Far Eastern Geological Administration. He fought in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45. In 1946 he became an associate of the division of the geology and minerals of the eastern regions at the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Geology (VSEGEI), and in 1956 he was made director of the division. In 1971, Krasnyi became head of the division of regional geology of the Far Eastern Institute of Mineral Raw Materials (DVIMS). His principal works have dealt with the regional geology and metallogeny of the eastern regions of the USSR and the geological structure of the earth’s crust in the Pacific geosynclinal belt. Krasnyi received the Lenin Prize in 1964 and has been awarded two orders and various medals.
