Lev Ivanovich Onishchik

Onishchik, Lev Ivanovich

Born in 1895, in Brest-Litovsk, present-day Brest; died Jan. 9, 1968, in Moscow. Soviet scientist in the theory of structures and structural design; professor (1935) and doctor of technical sciences (1938). Became a member of the CPSU in 1941.

Onishchik graduated from the Moscow Railroad Institute in 1927. From 1932 to 1959 he was the organizer and director of the laboratory for masonry structures at the Central Scientific Research Institute of Industrial Structures and head of the sub-department of structures and design at the Sergo Ordzhonikidze Moscow Institute of Engineering and Economics. The theoretical bases, design methods, and planning standards for masonry structures were developed for the first time under Onishchik’s direction. Onishchik was awarded two orders, as well as medals.
