melanocyte stimulating hormone

A group of polypeptide hormones derived from prepro-opiomelanocorticotropin, the product of POMC, which is secreted in the middle lobe of the hypophysis in response to MRH (an oxytocin-related releasing hormone) inhibited by MRIH (a tripeptide release inhibitor), both of which are secreted by the hypothalamus.
Function
Stimulates production and release of melanin by melanocytes in the skin and hair and in the brain; affects the appetite and sexual arousal.
Melanocyte stimulating hormones
• Alpha MSH—Shares the 13 amino acids of the N-terminal of ACTH; has some corticotropic activity.
• Beta MSH—Shares the 17 amino acids at the C-terminal of gamma-lipotropin.
