Air Army

Air Army

operational command of frontline (tactical) and strategic aviation in the armed forces of the USSR and the USA during World War II (1939-45). Air armies were designed to perform independent missions by means of the conduct of air operations in theaters of operations and to engage in joint combat action with the operational commands of ground forces and with the navy along coastal operational axes. Organizationally they were composed of several large aviation units, detached units, installations, and support and service units. In the USSR air armies of frontline aviation were created in 1942. In the air forces of fascist Germany, operational aviation commands were known as air fleets.
