NANOS1

NANOS1

A gene on chromosome 10q26.11 that encodes a protein thought to regulate translation of specific mRNAs by forming a complex with PUM2 at the 3'-UTR of mRNA targets. NANOS1 interacts with CTNNB1, CTNND1, PUM2 and SNAPIN; it interferes with the proadhesive and anti-invasive functions of E-cadherin, and is downregulated by E-cadherin. It is primarily expressed in the testes during germline development; in adults, it is expressed in spermatogonia, the male germline stem cells. It is also expressed in foetal ovaries and possibly also in premeiotic female germ cells.
Molecular pathology
NANOS1 upregulates the production of MMP14 to promote tumour cell invasion. It is highly expressed in lung cancer, especially in invasive tumour cells; its expression correlates with tumour aggressiveness.
