Lewis, Francis,

1713–1802?, political leader in the American Revolution, signer of the Declaration of Independence, b. Llandaff, Wales. As clothing contractor for British troops during the French and Indian War, he was captured (1756) at Oswego, and was sent to France. Lewis later returned to America and was a member of the Stamp Act Congress (1765) and the Continental Congress (1775–79).
