Kornaros, Vikentios

Kornaros, Vikentios

Born circa 1600; died 1670 in Sitia on Crete. Greek poet.

Kornaros wrote the epic Erotokritos (1650, published in Venice in 1713), one of the early masterpieces of modern Greek literature, and is believed to be the author of the play Abraham’s Sacrifice (1635, published in Venice in 1713), in which the biblical legend is interpreted from a humanistic point of view. The work of Kornaros, who was influenced by the Italian Renaissance, fostered the development of modern Greek literature in the late 18th and early 19th century.
