Korovniki

Korovniki

a 17th-century architectural ensemble in Yaroslavl, in former Korovniki sloboda (settlement), facing the Volga River. The Church of St. John Chrysostom (1649-54) has five cupolas and two chapels with tent roofs; its elegant porches and magnificent white stone and tile decoration reflect the reinforcement of secular principles in 17th-century ecclesiastical architecture. The detached bell tower with a tent roof (1680’s) compositionally unites the church with the Cathedral of the Virgin of Vladimir (1669). The architectural ensemble is completed by a fence containing the Sacred Gates (late 17th and early 18th century).
