a city (a settlement until 1958); the center of Meleuz Raion, Bashkir ASSR. It is located on the Meleuz River (a tributary of the Belaia) and has a railroad station 77 km south of the city of Sterlitamak and 211 km south of Ufa. Population, 27,000 (1973). Local industries include a milk-canning combine, a meat-packing plant, a wood-products combine, a brickyard, a plant producing reinforced-concrete items, a wood-package plant, an automobile repair facility, a brewery, and a sugar refinery. A dairy technicum is located in Meleuz.
