Mel’nikov, Oleg Aleksandrovich
Born Mar. 20 (Apr. 2), 1912, in the city of Khvalynsk, now in Saratov Oblast. Soviet astronomer. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1960).
Mel’nikov graduated from the University of Kharkov in 1933. In 1939 he became a senior research worker at the Central Astronomical Observatory of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR at Pulkovo. His chief works deal with astrospectroscopy, solar physics, the interstellar medium, astronomical instrumentation, and the history of astrophysics. He worked on the construction of the world’s largest reflecting telescope (6 m). Mel’nikov has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and several medals.
