Kostanecki, Stanislaw

Born Apr. 16, 1860, in Myszkow; died Nov. 15, 1910 in Würzburg. Polish chemist. Professor at the University of Bern from 1890.

Kostanecki and his colleagues were the first (1895) to discover the structure and develop the synthesis of flavone dyes, such as chrysin, apigenin, fisetin, and quercetin. He also determined the structure of curcumin and studied brazilein, hematoxylin, and cochineal. In collaboration with the German chemist K. Lieber-mann, Kostanecki established the relationship between the mordant properties of anthraquinone dyes and their structure.
