It is a commercial, industrial, and transportation center. A major engineering and textile center, it also has industries producing paper, rubber, furniture, electrical goods, and processed food. Norrköping was founded in the 14th cent. and was burned (1719) by the Russians in the Northern War. However, it has retained many old buildings, including Hedvig's Church (17th cent.).Norrköpinga city on the Motala River in eastern Sweden, in the county (län) of Östergötland, between Lake Glan and the Bråviken Fjord of the Baltic Sea. Population, 115,800 (1971). Norrköping is a large port, which handled about 3.5 million tons of freight in 1972. Founded in the 14th century, it is an old manufacturing center, dominated by textile and paper production and by metalworking. The rubber, electronics, radio electronics, and chemicals industries are rapidly developing. |
