Kotel’nyi Island

 

an island of the Novosibirskie group in the Laptev Sea. Area, 11,665 sq km. The island is composed of limestone and shale. Its hilly relief reaches elevations of 374 m. As the result of the neotectonic lifting of a sea sandbar, KotePnyi was joined to Faddeevskii Island. Kotel’nyi Island lies in the arctic wasteland zone; its sparse grass and shrub vegetation grows amid rocky streams in polygonum soils. There are outcrops of fossil ice on the island. Polar foxes are hunted on the island.
