Kotěra, Jan

 

Born Dec. 18, 1871, in Brno; died Apr. 17, 1923, in Prague. Czech architect. Founder of the 20th-century Czech school of architecture.

Kotrëa studied in Plzeň and under O. Wagner in Vienna. He became an instructor at the Industrial Arts School in Prague in 1898 and at the Prague Academy of Arts in 1911. At the beginning of his career he worked in the style of art nouveau. After 1906, Kotéra strove for functionality and for simplicity and structural clarity of forms. His principal works include the administration building in the city of Hradec Kralove (1903–04), the People’s House in Prostějov (1905–07), the law faculty building at the University of Prague (1907–20), and the Slaviia Bank in Saraev (1911–12).
