(kōt`kä), city (1998 pop. 55,551), Southern Finland prov., SE Finland, on the Gulf of Finland. It is a major export center for paper, pulp, and timber, and it has chemical industries. It was chartered in 1878.

a city in Finland, situated on the islands at the mouth of the Kymi River, near the northern coast of the Gulf of Finland. Adminstrative center of Kymi Province. Population, 34,-000 (1970). It is connected by rail with the mainland. Kotka is a major port for the export of timber products. The city has a sawmill, a pulp and paper plant, a sugar refinery, chemical enterprises (including a superphosphate plant), and factories producing equipment for the timber industry.
