Kotzebue

(kŏt`səbyo͞o), city (1990 pop. 2,751), NW Alaska, on Kotzebue Sound at the tip of Baldwin Peninsula; inc. 1958. It has one of the largest settlements of Eskimos in Alaska. Kotzebue is a regional trade and supply center with local government offices. Tourism and fishing are economically important. The city, set on tundra, began in the 18th cent. as an Eskimo trading post for arctic Alaska and part of Siberia. The NANA Museum of the Arctic is there.
