Location:Along the northwestern coast of Kauai, accessible only on foot or byboat. Land access is by the Kalalau Trail, which begins in Haena StatePark at the northwest end of Kuhio Highway (Route 56). Kalalau Valleyis also accessible by commercial boats from May15 through September 15.
Facilities:Hiking trails, primitive campsites; no drinking water.
Activities:Hiking, backpacking, primitive camping, shore fishing, seasonal goat hunting, commercial boat tours.
Special Features:Park features exceptionally scenic sea cliffs and valleys that can beviewed by land along the coastal Kalalau Trail or by air and sea withcommercial operators. It offers a primitive recreational experiencewith either a 2-mile (one way) day hike or a strenuous 11-milebackpacking trip to a primitive camp with an overnight stopover.Portions of the trail are strenuous and are recommended for experiencedhikers only, and knowledge and skills of primitive outdoor living arerequired for backpacking and camping along this coast. Swimming andwading are not recommended as ocean conditions here can be dangerous.
