Kovanov, Vladimir Vasil’evich

Born Feb. 28 (Mar. 13), 1909, in St. Petersburg. Soviet surgeon. Academician (1963) and vice-president (1966) of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR; Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1965). Member of the CPSU since 1939.

Kovanov graduated from the department of medicine of the first Moscow State University in 1931. He became chairman of the subdepartment of operative surgery and topographic anatomy of the first Moscow Medical Institute in 1947. He served at the same time as director of the institute (1956–66) and head of the organ and tissue transplant laboratory of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR.

Kovanov’s main studies have dealt with the treatment of chest wounds and anaerobic infection, traumatic shock, the organization of surgery in battle zones, the anatomy of the fasciae and intercellular spaces, cardiovascular surgery, and organ and tissue transplant. He developed a method for the intravascular injection of drugs, as well as a number of original medical techniques for the suture of blood vessels, the correction of mitral incompetence, and the repair of the biliary tract. Kovanov has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, six other orders, and various medals.
