Kovsi Tebrizi

(pseudonym; real name, Alijan Kovsi Ismail ogly). Dates of birth and death unknown. Azerbaijani poet of the early 17th century.

Kovsi Tebrizi, the son of an urban artisan and poet, was born in Tabriz. He condemned social injustice and ridiculed the clergy. The theme of romantic love has a major place in his lyric poetry, in which an idealistic and pantheistic world view and pessimistic motifs are combined with description of the thoughts and hopes of the people. A variety of figurative devices, refinement of form, and richness of intonation are characteristic of these verses. A collection of the lyric poems, or divan, has been preserved in two manuscripts, which are in the British Museum in London and the Museum of the History of the Georgian SSR in Tbilisi.
