Kovács, Andras

Born June 20, 1925, in Kide. Hungarian film director.

Kovács graduated from the College of Dramatic and Cinematic Arts in Budapest in 1950. For a number of years he headed the screenplay department of the Hunnia studio. He directed his first film, The Downpour, in 1960. He directed the feature films The Roofs of Budapest in 1961, The Stars of Autumn in 1962, Days of Cold in 1966 (released in the Soviet Union as The Roundup in January), and The Walls in 1968 (released in the Soviet Union as The Case of László Ambrucz). He directed the documentary Difficult People in 1964 and has done a number of film shorts.

The style of Kovács’ feature films which deal with moral and ethical questions and the theme of man’s responsibility to society and his own conscience, show the influence of the documentary. Kovács has been secretary of the Union of Cinematographers of Hungary since 1969.
