Kowloon

 

(also Chiulung), a peninsula in Southeast China, most of which is within the colony of Hong Kong (Hsiangkang). Situated on the coast of the South China Sea, the peninsula has an area of approximately 700 sq km. The terrain is primarily hilly, with elevations ranging from 400 to 600 m. The coast has many rocky capes and inlets, and there are many coastal islands.

The city has an airport and a port on the South China Sea. Kowloon is linked by railroad with the city of Canton in the People’s Republic of China and by ferry and tunnel with Hong Kong Island (Victoria), from which it is separated by a narrow strait. Industry includes the production of clothing and textiles, as well as food-processing, metalworking, and machine building, which is represented by shipyards and plants producing electrical and electronic equipment.
