Kozlovskii, Sergei Vasil’evich
Born April 3, 1885, in Odessa; died Nov. 19, 1962, in Moscow. Soviet artist. Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1940); People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1944). Became a member of the CPSU in 1940.
From 1900 to 1903, Kozlovskii studied at a private art workshop in Odessa. From 1903 to 1913 he was both a stage actor and an artist. In 1913 he began working as a motion-picture set designer (he also directed and acted in some films). Kozlovskii’s best designs included those from the films Mother (1926), The Forty-first (1927), The End of St. Petersburg (1927), Don Diego and Pelageia (1928), The Heir to Genghis Khan (1929), Holiday of St. Jorgen (1930), Outskirts (1933), Marionettes (1934), The Last Gypsy Camp (1936), Treasure Island (1938), and The 15-year-old Captain (1946). (Some of the set designs were done in collaboration with other artists.)
Beginning in 1924 (with interruptions), Kozlovskii taught at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
