Napier, William Francis Patrick

Born Dec. 17, 1785, in Celbridge, near Dublin; died Feb. 10, 1860, in Clapham Park, Surrey. English general (1859) and military historian. Of Irish descent.

Napier fought in the war against Napoleon on the Iberian Peninsula from 1808 to 1814. He advocated parliamentary reforms and condemned the repressions against the Radicals and the Chartists. Napier’s main historical work, devoted to the war on the Iberian Peninsula and covering the events from 1807 to 1814, was written from his personal memoirs and a vast range of sources. Marx called Napier a first-class English military writer (see K. Marx and F. Engels, Soch., 2nd ed., vol. 11, p. 549).
