MonotropaMonotropaa genus of perennial grassy plants of the Monotropaceae family. They are low saprophytic plants (feeding on dead organic material) that lack chlorophyll. They have succulent whitish or yellowish stalks, which carry reduced scale-like leaves. The strongly branched under-ground part is equipped with mycorrhizae. There are four or five species in the genus, growing in the forests of eastern Asia and America. There is one species in the USSR (M. uniflora), which lives in the coniferous and coniferous-broad-leaved forests of the Far East. Earlier, species of the Monotropa were joined with the genus Hypopitys and were related to the family of Pyrolaceae. Monotropa
